Cities are crucial in addressing global challenges like climate change and sustainability, especially concerning the food system. With half of the world's population urbanized, cities face urgent issues regarding climate, accessibility, and biodiversity in food production. Urban areas heavily rely on external sources for their food supply, necessitating a holistic approach to food system transitions through a sustainable future. The urgency for a sustainable and equitable food system is echoed by urban communities, governments, and international bodies, and a shift towards empowering marginalized communities against the dominance of large agribusinesses has emerged. Within food system actors, city governments also play a pivotal role in implementing sustainable food policies. International agreements recognize cities' role in sustainability transitions of food systems. Despite progress, more research and action are needed in urban food planning to address pressing global issues and the incumbent food regime effectively.
This special issue aims to delve into urban food planning as a pivotal response to these challenges, exploring a variety of methods, case studies, contemporary discussions, and implementations across four main themes:
- a. Governance: Examining changes in strategy and policy documents, the need for legal and legislative reforms, participatory approaches, the role of bottom-up initiatives, and the evaluation of new policymaking mechanisms such as urban food commissions and food policy councils.
- b. Planning: Focusing on agroecological urbanism, urban agriculture, planning and zoning decisions, design, spatial analysis, food metrics, city-region food systems (CRFS), and public health implications.
- c. Production, Procurement, and Consumption: Investigating organizations involved in production and consumption, short food supply chains, agroecology in urban regions, empowerment of food-citizens, support for local production, and enhancing consumer awareness of local products and the rural-urban nexus.
- d. Waste and Circularity: Addressing strategies for reducing food waste and promoting circular food systems.
We welcome a diverse range of theoretical and practical studies, models, reviews, and more that are not limited to the aforementioned themes.
