Mekanýn Biçimleniþi ve Kentsel Karakterin Oluþumu; Ýzmir (Kemeraltý) Örneði

Kentler; coðrafyalarýna, ülkelerine, toplumlarýn gelenek ve ihtiyaçlarýna, farklý mimari ve planlama akýmlarýna göre þekillenmiþtir. Tarihsel süreçte kentlerin yapýsý farklý þehirlerde farklý biçimlerde ortaya çýkmaktadýr. Fiziksel öðelerin farklý biçimlerde bir araya geliþi bu farklýlýklarý oluþturmakta ve kentleri birbirinden farklýlaþtýrmaktadýr. Yirminci yüzyýlýn baþýndan itibaren, yapýlý çevrenin üretim biçiminde deðiþen yaklaþýmlar, geliþen teknoloji, kentsel mekânda standartlaþma ve yapýlý çevrenin tek-tipleþmesi; kentsel mekâna özgü karakterin kaybolmasýna ve benzer kentsel çevreler oluþmasýna neden olmuþtur. José Luis Sert’e (1956) göre, güzel olarak deðerlendirilen kentlerin hepsinde, bütünü meydana getiren yapýlarýn uyumluluðu, ölçekler arasý uyum, kentsel karakterin devamlýlýðý ve insan ölçeði temel alýnmýþtýr. Lynch (1960) ise, uyumlu ve homojen mekanlarýn belli bir devamlýlýk içinde anlam kazanacaðýný savunmakta, ayrýca kentsel karakterin öneminden de bahsetmektedir. Cullen’a (1961) göre ise; renk, doku, eþsiz olma ve kullanýcýyý bir araya getirme gibi özellikler, kentsel mekâna karakter kazandýrmakta ve mekâný eþsizleþtirmektedir. Bu yaklaþýmlardan ve kentlerin dinamik yapýsýndan yola çýkarak, mevcut kentsel karakterin farklý süreçlerde nasýl oluþtuðu sorusu ortaya çýkmaktadýr. Kentsel alanda deðiþimin tanýmý, oluþumu ve analizi üzerine teorik ve metodolojik bir çerçeve sunmayý amaçlayan bu çalýþmada, kentsel karakterin oluþumu tartýþýlacaktýr. Bir yeri benzersiz kýlan, onu baþka yerlerden farklý kýlan ve kentsel karakterin deðiþmesine neden olan sorular cevaplanmaya çalýþýlacaktýr. Araþtýrmanýn yöntem bölümünde, kentsel mekânýn farklý dönemlere ait deðiþimini analiz etmeyi saðlayan kentsel morfoloji bilimi ve Conzen tarafýndan geliþtirilen “kent plan çözümlemesi” ele alýnacaktýr. Bu baðlamda, tarihi kent merkezleri, tarihi katmanlaþmanýn kentsel alanda açýkça gözlenebilmesi nedeniyle önem taþýmaktadýr. Ýzmir Tarihi Kent Merkezi–Kemeraltý örnek çalýþma alanýnda gerçekleþtirilen bu çalýþmanýn, benzer alanlarda yürütülecek araþtýrmalar için yol gösterici olmasý amaçlanmaktadýr.

Formation of Space and Urban Character; Izmir (Kemeralti) Case Study

Cities have been shaped by the nations they are part of, geography, traditions, needs of societies, and architectural and planning trends. Different forms and structure of cities have emerged through the historical process. Physical elements that compose the different forms of cities differentiate each city from the other. From the beginning of the 20th century, the change in approach to the production mode of the built environment, development of technology, and standardization of the urban space have caused the production of similar urban environments and have resulted in the loss of urban character. According to José Luis Sert (1956), in all the cities considered to be beautiful, the unity of harmonious structures, the inter-scale harmony, the continuity of the urban character, and the human scale were taken as the basis. Lynch (1960) claims that the homogeneous spaces with harmony and texture will gain meaning within a certain continuity. He also mentions the importance of urban character. According to Cullen (1961), features such as color, texture, uniqueness, and bringing the user together characterize the urban space and make the place unique. Considering these approaches and the dynamic structures of cities, the question of how the existing urban character is formed through different processes emerges. In this study, which aims to present a theoretical and methodological framework on the definition, formation, and analysis of change in urban space, the formation of urban character will be discussed. Questions such as what makes a place unique, what makes it different from other places, and what causes changes in urban character will be explored. Urban morphology and town-plan analysis developed by Conzen, which aid the analysis of changes in urban space through different periods will be discussed in the methods section of the research. In this context, historic city centers are important because of the fact that historical stratification can be clearly observed in the urban space. This study, which is carried out in the Kemeraltý (Izmir Historic City Center) case study, is intended to be a guide for researchers in similar case studies.
